Trump Endorses Religious Persecution

February 13, 2020

Recently we witnessed something that should have set off alarm bells like a 4 alarm fire. A mere 244 years after the birth of our nation, the leader of our country openly and blatantly mocked, ostracized, and persecuted two elected officials because of their religious practices. We’re talking about a nation founded for religious freedom, tolerance, and where worshippers would be free from persecution. Trump's behavior ought to rattle and startle you but I’m willing to bet that you are neither rattled nor startled. Probably because you have come to expect that type of behavior from our President by now. It even took me a few days to realize what had occurred: Religious persecution at the highest level of our government!

The colony of Maryland was established as a safe haven for Catholics; Pennsylvania as a safe haven for Quakers. Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, and Connecticut were sanctuary colony-states long before we had sanctuary cities. The Catholics, Quakers, Pilgrims, Puritans and many others came to America to practice their religion free from persecution, yet in 2020, the President made it clear that he detested Speaker Pelosi and Senator Romney because they proclaimed that they use the tenants of their faith to guide the decisions in their daily lives. WHAT’S MORE TRAGIC iS THAT NO ONE FROM THE REPUBLICAN PARTY SAID TRUMP WAS WRONG! What if the President came after you because you prayed and asked God for guidance? The Republicans chose the vileness of Trump over reverence for their creator. The fact that NOT ONE Republican publicly disavowed how the President behaved (AT OF ALL PLACES, A PRAYER BREAKFAST) is incomprehensible!

Trump basically said, “Not only will I belittle your reliance on a deity and your reliance on long standing and established spiritual principles, but I will also belittle it IN A PLACE where you celebrate your spiritual principles. And guess what? As if I was standing on 5th Avenue in broad daylight, NOBODY WILL DO A DARN THING ABOUT IT. The Republicans recognize me as their king AND their Don. Furthermore, the kissed my ring when they acquitted me even though they knew I was AS GUILTY AS GOTTI. Why did they do it? Because they didn’t want their heads on a pike!"

When the President went after the Muslims, did you think he would stop there? Did you not think that he would come for the Christians also? And the following should REALLY chap your hide... He didn’t go after Senator Romney and Speaker Pelosi because of their particular religions, he persecuted them because they practice A religion. Don’t you find something sinister about that? Even the White Nationalists should have been outraged; for even they claim to be Christians.

The silence of the Republicans reminds me of a 1945 quote by Pastor Martin Niemöller from Germany. It reads,
“In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up.”
I pray that we all have the faith of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, Peolsi, and Romney. Something tells me we’ll need it!
